I'll get the ball rolling here. I haven't tried it yet while turning, but a technique I use on wood to harden the surface prior to finishing is to scorch it while it's dry with a flame. This imparts colour, if you're careful, and after wetting/whiskering and rubbing back with 1200 grade wet and dry gives the surface a VERY hard final dry finish ready for taking whatever finish you want to put on it. Just buffing the wood actually looks like a finish has been applied. Might try that soon while turning.
